Time keeps tickin' away

So. According to the USMC, at 6pm on March 30th I will be in Jacksonville, NC with my arms around the most important person in my world. (!!!) I. can't. wait.
We're still working on getting Rob moved up to MD permanently (imagine that? A married couple that LIVES together?!?! Madness).

Speaking of the time...
Today we say goodbye to my old friend; my alarm clock. I got it for Christmas in 1988 (yes, you read that correctly. I was 8) and it's gone literally everywhere with me since then. It was pink and purple (currently grey and light grey) and it's covered in sparkly stickers of butterflies, hearts, and other Lisa Frank stuff.

Rob hates it.
Well, "hate" is a strong word...

Anyway, because I apparently take after my father, I refuse to get rid of or replace anything that still works. Plus (and I know this makes me sound 80 years old) I like that I know how everything works on my clock. (i.e. where the snooze button is). But in the last two weeks, my beloved clock has stopped picking up radio signals altogether. So now I just wake up to that fabulous 'no signal' sound: "KKKSSSSCCCCHHHHH".
Yeah. Today is new clock day. (And it's all black and masculine, honey). :-)

TWO MORE WEEKS

I would love for someone to explain to me what is going on with our weather. On Tuesday, my friend Jenn and I actually had dinner on our deck because it was SO nice outside. Friday night I'm driving home in what appears to be an ice storm. This makes absolutely no sense.
I've got a packed Saturday ahead of me so you guys talk amongst yourselves today. Adios.

Sad Kukich/Townleys

In depressing news, Laura and I went back to our hometown this weekend. The Kukich Family Dog, Casey, was put down after 15 long years. I know it sounds hokey, but it really is like losing a family member. We're all bummed, to put it lightly. Anyway, so this is the earliest picture I could find of her- it's from my 8th grade year. (That's right, I scrapbooked even back in the day). This is our girl

Mercury Rising

Soooo.... My thermostat says it's 70 degrees, I have a fire going, I'm wearing sweats, I have two blankets and I'm still freezing.
Yeah...survey says "Danielle Is Sick".
My good friend Jessica brought over a thermometer to check my temp. Did you know if you drop those, they break? Oh yes, my friends, into tiny little pieces. Two minutes (and a phone call to the poison control center) later we're cleaning Mercury off my floor and opening all the windows to 'fumigate the house" as ordered by the poison control guy.
....and it's 14 degrees outside.

well, at least now I have a REASON to be cold!

twenty-three!!!

I'm worried that I'm getting sick...i have that "hurts to swallow and talk" sore throat deal going on. I'd like to thank all the people who come to work coughing and sneezing so as not to "waste" ther PTO. Oh, and ENOUGH WITH THE SNOWING ALREADY! Yeah... I'm grumpy pants today.
But the good news is that ROB IS COMING HOME IN 23 DAYS (or less!) I have to say, for a marine in Iraq going on 5 hours of sleep a night, he really knows how to make a girl feel un-lonely (it's not a word. I know). He was on the phone at 3am (his time) last night walking me through the steps of cooking one of the Townley 'staple meals'. There was a lot of "I hear banging, Danielle, what are you banging?" and "Did you wash out the pan? I didn't hear water running"! It was hysterical. We figure if you can still spend quality time together from thousands of miles away - you must be doing something right (even if you burn the hell out of dinner... don't look at me- my dinner ROCKED).

Laura's Birthday!

Oh my goodness I feel OLD. We went out last night for dinner and drinks at Hunan Manor and then bowled until 1am. I remember my early 20's. I could stay out until 3am and still get up for my 8am classes AND make it through soccer practice! What happened to me?! Today I'm exhausted. But seriously, gooooood times!
Laura and Jay DEFINITELY not drinking alcohol....

Me and the Birthday Girl!

This would be Greg in our third game where we decided to bowl for "Style Points"

Aaaaand Pete....

And bowling through eachother's legs... this is about when I started wondering if we'd get kicked out....

Good times, my friends. HAPPY 29TH, SIS!

Pictures of my HUZ!

For those of you who've been asking: Rob is doing great! (30 more days!!!) He's joined a hash house out in Iraq and as usual, everyone loves him. He's been the Hare a few times and earned his "hash name" (which I will not be printing here) Pause: for those of you who are seriously confused, google "hash" or "hashing" and you can read all about it. Our site requires research from time to time. We find it keeps you fresh.
If my ADD doesn't get the best of me, I'll post a picture of him with this entry.

Moving On: Tomorrow is also my sister's 29th birthday (dun Dun DUN!) I'm taking her out bowling with some friends this weekend. You know...if her back doesn't go out on her... I hear that happens to old people. (Zing!) Man I love being a little sister.

Additional Non-related Thoughts By Danielle:
Is anyone else out there still watching Grey's Anatomy? If so...were you secretly hoping that Grey was going to drowned over the past few weeks? No?....oh...me either...
No seriously, I don't mean to sound sadistic, but it is FAKE and I've hit my limit with Meredith's whining. If five minutes could pass on the show where we don't have to hear her go on and on about McDreamy and her relationship problems, well... let's just say it wouldn't be the worst thing. Although it was pretty obvious she would pull through. Otherwise the show would have to change their name to "... Anatomy".

Sorry that reading this entry has been a lot like Channel Surfing... like I said; ADD. ;-)

Mr. and Mrs. Potownley Head

Well it's getting a little warmer and the ice is finally melting. I've been dying to get outside and throw around the frisbee...also possibly take Scout to the dog park so he'll stop following me around the house like "Children of the Corn". The new job is going well and keeping me busy. My office is full of sarcastic people - which is a little sice of heaven for me.
Laura and I have decided it's "Sister Weekend". We just got back from the mall where we purchased Mr. Potato Heads (don't roll your eyes. you know you wish you'd thought of it first).

This is our"loose interpretation" of the Townleys! Love you honey!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Wow, so really- this Valentine's Day in no way comes close to last year- but all things considered (Rob being in Iraq) it wasn't so bad. Work was closed, thanks to the crazy ice storm, so Jessica and I spent hours in the new craft room catching up on scrapbooking. Rob sent me flowers (he's my favorite husband ever), and had gourmet meals delivered to our front door- so for dinner I had filet mingon with a salad and a twice baked potato (SERIOUSLY my favorite husband ever). As if that wasn't enough, Josh and Heather (friends of ours) stopped by to give me flowers and chocolates "in lieu of Rob's absence". And later this evening, while watching syndicated television/ talking on the phone with another military wife (strength in numbers, ladies) the Dz's invited me over to watch a movie.

Here I was all prepared to spend today alone - this being the day of LUUUUV - and my friends were all over the place!
You guys are sweet. And as my Spanish candy hearts say (that's right, you can buy them in Spanish now) - TE AMO!

P.S. it's late and I'm sure I spelled everything wrong....yeah, I reeely dont kare.

History Repeats Itself

You might remember Feb 13th of last year when I flew out to see Rob in Africa for Valentine's Day. (Pause: Unless you and your sweetie personally saved the world on Valentine's Day, I still claim that we hold the title for the best one yet). Anyway, while I will not be flying out this year (obviously) the weather catastrophe from last year has reared it's ugly head again. Fortunately this time the only trip I'll be missing out on is to the gym. Cause really... ice+snow = popcorn+movies!

40 days and 40 nights

That's how long we have until Rob comes home.... That's also how long it took God to flood the entire earth. So...yeah.....

I'm hanging out at the casa de Townley today... I've been on a movie-watching heist over the last few days. It got so bad last night that I actually watched "My Girl". I feel like that is a desperate cry for help- or should I say heat. Hibernating in the winter doesn't do it for me.. it needs to warm up outside already.

Tuesday, February 06, 2007

Baby it's cold outside.

Just thought you guys in the southern part of the US would like to know. As of 4pm in Maryland- it's literally ONE DEGREE outside.

....global warming my a$$.

Fargo. Yeah.

So... yesterday I cleaned our house from top to bottom and decided to do 'dinner and a movie' at home with my dog. I borrowed Fargo from my neighbors (who own every DVD known to man) and proceeded to watch what I THOUGHT was a movie about either a hockey team or sled dogs.

Yeah. Just in case you ever wanted to rent that to watch with your kids, you should know; It ain't about hockey, folks. I'd like to cite the most disturbing point of the movie which involved a human inside of a wood chipper. Yeah, that won't keep you up at night....
I'm going to go rent something a little less depressing, like Titanic.

Saturday, February 03, 2007

alright already!

Okay, I'm posting this specifically for someone at work who HOUNDS me daily to post pictures of the craft room... (*ahem*)
I was going to do the whole "before and after" thing... but I can't access the before photos right now (re: I'm too lazy to do that) so here are the 'afters'

Don't think it hasn't dawned on me that it takes a very secure man to let his wife paint a room lavender. :-)
Hope you like it, Honey!

I'm bringing sexy back

Well, as predicted, this past week was NUTS! I was working long hours at the new job because my yearly check-ups (doc, dentist, etc) are all set up for the same time of year so I can get them all over with. But with my job being brand new, I have no PTO saved up, so I've been making up hours like a champion! I have a serious computer tan. (I'm hot like that).
Anyway, glad that's over!
Rob FINALLY got the package that a bunch of us have been working on since November! We made about 5 short videos on DVD (The new macs have a sweet movie editing feature complete with sound track, credits, etc.) and sent them off to him in Iraq. I hadn't mentioned it before because our friends made me swear I'd keep it a surprise. Rob and I are not good at keeping surprises from each other, so this is pretty monumental. If all of the participants consent, maybe we'll post the blooper reel on youtube or something. Stay tuned for that one!
My other project has been our (re: my) craft room- which is finally complete, but I seem to be too busy to take a picture of... I'll work on that this weekend.
The only other news I have is that Rob comes home in roughly 48 MORE DAYS! Or, as Rob puts it; "NEXT MONTH! (there's a chance we're already getting excited about that one).

Sunday, January 28, 2007

And in the morning? I'm making Waffles!

Today is my buddy, Jenn's WEDDING DAY! (CONGRATS YOU GUYS!) In our excitement for our friends, Rob and I decided to comply with their "no wedding gifts, please" request and simply get them a "Happy National January 28th!" gift. (It's legit. I looked it up). Anyway, we decided on the waring pro waffle maker. My uncle bought us one on our wedding day and we use it almost every weekend. We've been buying them for people's weddings ever since. So I brought it over this morning because I knew they had a ton of family over and may need some "breakfast help".
I got my huge box out of the car, went inside to say hi and found them already eating breakfast....more specifically, eating WAFFLES. (dun Dun DUN!). Awk.Ward.
Actually I have a history of buying people stuff they already have. Call it a "gift". (get it? gift? I'm so good.)
So, back to the drawing board for the Townleys...

In other news, Rob is doing really well. We have something like 50 days left until he comes home! (!!!!!) And in case you weren't aware, we are closing in on the FINAL YEAR of his enlistment! (Party at our house). So yeah, 2007 is looking good here in Townley-land. Okay. Tomorrow is Monday and if this week is anything like last week- I'll see you guys on Saturday.

Spin it

Well THAT week went by fast! Dude. I'm not even sure I was in it!
In an effort NOT to simply donate $35 a month to Gold's Gym, I'm getting back on track with showing up for work outs. I know it sounds crazy, but when I was home all day, I just couldn't seem to make time to go- but after a ten hour work day when I'm dog tired, for some reason it's surprisingly appealing. Anyway, so I started with a spinning class the other day. (Spinning = stationary bike work out). And someone must have left out the OH SO IMPORTANT sidenote that the (drill) instructor who teaches it thinks we're training for the Tour de France. By then end of the class all I could say was "I...want...my....mom". After class the instructor encouraged us all to be sure to show up on Sunday for her TWO HOUR CLASS. (riiiiight, that'll happen). I haven't really felt comfortable sitting since then, but I'm told the bruising will subside.

Last Call for Twenty-Six...

I'm turning 27 in exactly an hour and a half.
For some reason this year feels 'old' to me. (I know that half of my you would love to reach through the computer and strangle me for that one. Whatever. I get to say what I want. I'm the Birthday Girl).
My (insert 100 complimentary adjectives here) husband sent me a bouquet of my favorite flowers today. He's also informed me that I can turn 26 again this year if I want to. (Seriously ladies, if there's a better man out there, I have yet to meet him). But I'm still having issues... wait till I hit 30. I'm gonna be a mess!
Anyway, hopefully Robin Hamilton will be here next year- but in the mean time, I had a great time shopping at IKEA today with Jenn and then coming home to hang out with some close friends and fam. Thanks guys! One day soon we can play games with EVEN teams! Until then... I'll be the third, fifth, or eleventh wheel any time. :-)

It's gettin' hot in here...

Well $130 later, the NEW heat guys (who showed up on time and everything!) I hired managed to FLIP THE SWITCH that the previous guy turned off- which was keeping my house at a cool 45 degrees. Seriously though, with the weather we're having - you just can't put a price on being able to walk around the house in a t-shirt and shorts PRETENDING it's summer time. Ahhhh.

We are SOOO original!

Okay, this picture is from our big ultimate Frisbee excursion last Saturday. I hocked it from Jessi's blog though, so to see others you'll have to visit her site (and believe me, they only get better). I love days when I get to be a kid.

Honey, we totally missed you!

Oh, and it's official: No Heat. The "Heat Guy" is coming out to see me this morning.

'Sup.

Sorry if I've been giving you all abandonment issues with my absence lately. Things have been a little crazy with the variable hotel I seem to be running out of our house! This weekend in addition to my new company's Holiday Dinner, I got a visit from college buddy, Katie.
First of all, I have to give the new company some props. We ate at Roy's in Baltimore. Last year when they ate at Roy's, John Travolta had flown in JUST to have dinner there. Yeah, it's crazy nice.
The job is going really well (thanks everyone who's been asking!) Rob surprised me with an "early birthday/congrats on the new job" gift last week- which has basically put him in the Husband Hall of Fame. And I'm not sure if I mentioned this 100 times yet, but we're finally officially PAST the halfway point in Rob's deployment! (This is also beneficial because after three years of deployments, my creative care package ideas are growing sparse).
Right, as I was saying, Katie came up this weekend and we repainted one of the bedrooms (cough*craft room*cough) lavender and chocolate. It turned out really well, but still needs some curtains, etc. Which is also why I'm not putting up pictures yet. If I've learned anything from blogging, it's that you guys are a tough crowd! I'll get them up soon, though.

In closing, I'm not sure if the heat is "still" not working because it's been HOT here lately... but don't worry, I'll be sure to let you know this weekend when the temp drops about 30 degrees.

Angry Home Ownership Words.

Today's topic comes from the book I'm going to write some day on Home Ownership. (Look for it in the "Horror" section).
You and Your Heat: a Love/Hate Relationship.

The day we moved out of our home back in July- we had a brand new water heater installed for our tenants. (For you renters out there, that's a $900 investment). The day we moved back in three months later, I discovered we had no hot water. (This has cost me another $200 to "re-fix").

I came home from work on Monday and my fireplace was on. (it's gas). Just decided to turn on. "Welcome home, Danielle".

The clencher was last night. It was 35 degrees outside and 35 degrees INSIDE. Why?Because Now we have NO heat. The heat kicks in and turns on- but it's blowing cold air (that was a fun surprise). I'm currently writing this to you in flannel pants, socks, shoes, longsleeve shirt and sweatshirt and I'm still FREEZING. (and slightly pissed off).

How is it that everything in my house has managed to break in the three months we were gone?
At this point I have no idea if our house just sucks, renters went at the pipes with sledghammers, or our plumber is lying to us and actually did break everything. My 8-Ball keeps telling me to "Ask Again Later".

Growl.

Back in the saddle again

Man I love my friends. Thanks for all the phone calls, text messages, and emails you guys! I thought today would be kind of anti-climatic because I'd be coming home from my first day of work (in forever!) and no one would be home to hear about it. But in addition to the fact that Rob called me before AND after work today - you guys were all over the place. I even had two "wake up" calls just in case I overslept.
The only negative response I got was from the dog. (ironic?) I think Scout was a little miffed with me leaving him home alone for more than an hour at a time. I came home this evening and he was acting like what we like to call "Captian Angry-Pants".

Also, today was the end of an era. My cellphone, which most of you have become very familiar with the inner workings of- has been REPLACED! (finally!) I now own a dependable cellphone that I don't have to recharge IN THE CAR. It takes pictures, movies, plays music, and probably cooks and does my laundry. Yeah. It's amazing.
The old cellphone will be donated to a museum. I'm pretty sure it's the oldest one on record in the US.

And I thought I'd never use high school algebra

Your dog can consume up to 250mg of theobromine per kg (of their body wieght) and survive.
Why do I know this? Because I came home and found our darling little mutt had actually dug to the bottom of a massive gift bag, pulled out a GIFT WRAPPED bar of Hershey's Dark Chocolate (My Grandma had meant for Rob) and strived to achieve the following result:

He ate the equivalent of THREE human-sized servings of chocolate. (Must take after me!)
I spent the next 30 minutes (after controlling my anger) on the phone with my vet, the center for poison control, the animal center for poison control, and finally on the internet. Everyone seemed to know that chocolate can kill a dog. It eats through their liver.(For future reference, dark chocolate and bitter cooking chocolate are a lot more toxic than milk chocolate.) But no one knew how much specifically. The animal center for poison control won't even speak with you until you pay them $55 over the phone with your credit card. But by that time I found enough information on the internet to help me out.
Then it was like high school math was back- with the added pressure of life or death.
A dog can consume up to 250mg of theobromine per kg and survive. Scout weighs 29 pounds.
If dark chocolate contains 450mg of theobromine per ounce, and Scout eats 90 grams of chocolate, will Scout survive?
(It's a reallllly good thing my friend Shari was here because I suck at math.)

The answer is yes. He's fine. A "little" hyper last night (he was literally sprinting through the house until around 3am) but seems to be okay today. Never a dull moment with the Townley family.

P.S. it's BEAUTIFUL outside today and a bunch of us are playing ultimate frisbee around 1pm. if you're in the area and you want to come, please consider yourself invited!

Workin' for the Man

So, I am officially shouting from the rooftops that I START MY JOB ON MONDAY!
As you may know, it's been a few weeks since they hired me, but with the holidays, etc. all the hoops that needed to be jumped through were impossible because everyone went on vacation. For like, ever. Anyway so you may need to find some other website to brighten up your Monday morning because I'll be getting spun up on all the new and interesting things I've missed out on over the last four months of unemployment. (woohoo!)

Yesterday I got the monthly newsletter from Rob's commander (or whatever he's called). They send these out to us poor, lonely housewives every month to tell us how great the Marines are and basically how we should all get pregnant and raise sons that will one day be part of The Few, The Proud. They probably figure that if they time it right, Rob will retire and little Johnny Townley will be old enough to replace his Dad in Iraq. (Nice HR move. Not so much for this family).
Anyway, according to Captian America, Rob is almost at the halfway point in his deployment. Yeah... not buying that one. Officially, yes, I see that it's the half way point. (Danielle can add). HOWEVER, after a few deployments, you start to realize that about 3 weeks before Rob comes home they will magically extend him for another 45 days or so. (I'm convinced they say "days" because it sounds better than "6 more weeks" or "a month and a half"). Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to be proved wrong by the USMC and have Rob show up sometime in mid-March, but it would definitely be a first for these guys.
This Marine wife thing, it's SO glamorous.

Monday, January 01, 2007

I meant to post this yesterday...

Today I had the neighbors over for breakfast at the Townley household. Josh brought his own cereal and I'm still scratching my head to figure out if he just reallllly wanted cereal, or doesn't trust my cooking...hmmm. (I swear, I'm improving!)
The other Dziurdzy and the Greivell's threw caution to the wind and dug into my amazing spread of eggs and toast. (That's right, I'm classy). This morning it was decided that the goal for the new year is that between the three houses, we will lose the weight of an entire person. I'm hoping they are referring to a rather small person...like maybe a six year old. Because not one of us can stand to lose enough to equal even a quarter of a grown person's body weight - and the last time I checked, I think Rob is actually trying to GAIN weight (There's one in every bunch). Anyway, I'm thinking the idea may need some more thought. Like maybe our goal could be to run a 10k together or something....
I was then called by Jenn and Rob who informed me I was going to see a movie with them. We saw The Good Shepherd. Great movie. If you plan to see it in the theater, there are three things you should know ahead of time:
1.) The movie is easily two hours
2.) You can not afford to miss 5 minutes for a bathroom break
3.) The movie is EASILY two hours.
Yeah. so try to keep the liquids to a minimum, people. Ahhh, good times.

Old News, New Pics

Sooooo.... remember about two months ago when we moved back in and I told you I'd post pictures when I got them? Well, I finally got them this morning. So for your viewing pleasure, some pictures of the move.
Our First Trip

Second Trip

Laura making sure Adam doesn't fall out of the truck...

Third and Final trip (whew!)

As we round out 2006....

Well I know how we all just LOOOVE the surveys. I couldn't let 2006 pass without just one more. I got a lot of these on myspace, but they were mostly "who was your crush this year?" and "Did you go to homecoming?" so I stole the less-annoying questions and compliled them into one short survey. Yes, I have that kind of time on my hands. And you just spent the last 30 seconds reading about it....45 seconds if you're a slow reader.

1.) IS YOUR TREE STILL UP?
- Oh yeah. The way I see it, I can get another two weeks out of that bad boy.

2.) HOW MUCH DEBT ARE YOU IN FROM BUYING CHRISTMAS PRESENTS?
- We have a rule not to go in debt buying gifts. That's not what Christmas is about.

3.) IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN A CHINESE GIFT EXCHANGE, WHAT DID YOU GET?
- I am the proud owner of the "Super Sized Mother Hover". (it's a ginourmous frisbee...and yeah, I know ginourmous isn't a word. go with it.)

4.) WHAT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU THIS YEAR?
- Jacksonville, NC. (Need I say more?)

5.) NAME SOMETHING YOU DID THIS YEAR THAT YOU'RE PROUD OF
- I put my family over my career.

6.) ANY REGRETS?
- Are you kidding? Everyone has regrets. Right now I'm regretting that bowl of ice cream I ate about 20 minutes ago.

7.) HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS?
- I don't do New Year resolutions. If you need to make a change, make the change now. No sense in waiting for the end of an entire year before jumping on it. (It also irritates me that I won't be able to find a parking space at my gym for the next 90 days.)

8.) SOMETHING YOU HOPE TO DO NEXT YEAR
- Go on a cruise with Rob.

9.) PLANS FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE?
- Rob and I will be celebrating via telephone. He's decided to call me at midnight in Iraq AND Eastern Standard Time. Think of it as a "His and Hers" New Year's Eve package. (When you've done a few of these in a row, you start to get creative).

10.) NAME ONE THING YOU SPLURGED ON THIS YEAR THAT COSTS MORE THAN $100
- Does an unforseen expense count as splurging??? If so, new tires for my car. That's right, I'm a splurging wild woman!

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

Oh, Lord.

A close friend of ours has experienced a loss beyond words. On Christmas Day her mother, brother and father were in a massive car accident in North Carolina. Her mom and brother did not survive and her father is currently in the ICU. I wish I had something uplifting to say here, but my reason for posting this awful news is to ask you to pray for this family. Our friends are rallying to support them in practical ways (cooking meals, feeding the cat, etc.) But what they really need is a comfort that we are not capable of providing.
I've sat and looked at this entry for 10 minutes now and I still don't know what to say next except to ask you guys: If you have ever been in a similar situation to these friends of ours and you have a recommendation as to what we can do to ease their pain, please by all means, let me know.
Thanks-

Merry Christmas...and stuff

Well, it's Christmas...again.
Rob and I are trying like hell to come up with some Christmas Cheer between the two of us (yeah, I know. just said "hell" and it's Christmas. Bad Danielle.) but we're "0 for 3" for times that Rob's been home for the Holidays so forgive us if our Christmas Spirit is wearing a little thin this year. Actually I think this is Rob's sixth Christmas in a row where he's been deployed somewhere.
Aaaaaand it sucks.
This morning every song on the radio was of the "I'll be home for Christmas" genre. I thought that was just mean. I finally resorted to some classical music (No words).
Anyway, I don't mean to detract from Jesus' birthday just because we both have bad attitudes. Like I said, we're trying... I still paid the toll for the guy behind me on my way home from Delaware today.
*If you travel as much as we do, you know that it costs $10 in tolls to go from Maryland to Delaware. We've made a habit of paying for whoever is behind us in line at one of the three tolls. (So now you know. Get behind the black Honda.)*
The thing is, I'm never sure if the "toll people" actually pass along my $3 and "Have a great day" to the next car... they probably just roll their eyes and buy something from the vending machine on their next break.

What??! I told you! My Christmas Spirit is AWOL!

For want of a nail

Well..if there was any doubting it, I've come to the resolution that Iraq sucks, just as much as it did the last two times I was over here. However, in a concerted effort to figure out ways that I can stay connected with everybody at home, I invite you guys to all give some, if not all, of the following a try - just for kicks.

1. If you frequent any locations less than 5 miles from your house, walk there from now on. No driving. Walk everywhere. Should you actually have to drive somewhere, find at least three winter coats, put them all on, and fill the pockets with rocks. Then fill a backpack with rocks and put that on. Untwist a coat hanger until it's straight, shove it in the backpack until it sticks out of the top (radio antenna). Then get in your car and drive wherever you have to go, without adjusting the seat for comfort.
2. Should nature call, find a refrigerator box and cut a door in it. Place some books on the floor of the box to anchor it, put a bucket in the middle of the box, fill it with water/blue food coloring - there you have your toilet. Do not empty said bucket for at least four days for good measure. Leave yourself exactly 15 squares of toilet paper for the week.Make it last, people. Two-ply paper counts as two squares! No cheating!
3. Should you grow tired...troll the neighborhood for someone in the midst of moving their home, hopefully you'll find one of those nifty "PODS" moving containers in their yard. Grab a sleeping bag and a small pillow, get a little lamp, and crawl inside. For some reason you find two or three other people in there who you don't know. Make some space for yourself. Close the door to keep out the wind/rain/exploding mortar rounds that sometimes land in your general vicinity. Sleep for 3 - 4 hours a day. Stay up for 2 days straight at least once a week.
4. For your morning grooming routine, invite the entire block to your bathroom. Get everyone to line up for a shower behind you in towels and flip flops. Hop in the shower, turn on the cold water. Rinse for 30 seconds. Turn off the water. Lather up, rinse off. Repeat once. Hop out. If there are more than 8 people in line, the last two don't get a shower since you must run out of water at number 5. Sucks to be the dirty kids. Once you get done, walk in flip flops through some mud (distance between the showers and your bunk)...just so your feet are dirty again, and ready to put on some nice clean socks.
5. Tape a hair dryer to your belt (pistol). take it everywhere you go. tie the power cord to your belt. Every time you walk into a building, take the hairdryer out, inspect it to make sure it's empty (no bullets), show someone that it's empty, and walk into the building. Sleep with the hairdryer next to your pillow.
6. Eat strange food. Stop eating anything fresh, period. Buy powdered milk, and reconstitute it with cold water. Put this on your cereal in a little bowl for breakfast. Try to convince yourself that it tastes like real milk. Forget what real milk tastes like. Start to like the taste of reconstituted milk.
More to come folks....

Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! I'm posting some pictures from Rob's 5k run this morning in Iraq. Apparently it was a 'fun run' with the pope, a nun, and Jesus (complete with a "Happy Birthday to Me" sash)
... Enjoy!

Friday, December 22, 2006

Oh what fun it is to...

Okay. Fun stuff from my buddy, Karen!

Go Here.

Dear Ssgt Santa,

A letter received today in Iraq...

Dear Rob.

I am eight. Thank you for being brave and protecting the world. I hope you don't get hurt. I'm sorry you can't be home to spend the holidays with your family. Come home soon. I want a guitar for Christmas. Yay!

-Joanna, Mrs. Anderson's 3rd Grade Class

I love kids. :-)

4 more days till Christmas

So, I've been kind of a shmuck about updating over the last few days. My guess is that you probably haven't noticed...that's okay. Neither did I.
I'd say things have been busy, but that's lying and with Santa coming and whatnot, well, I don't want to take any risks. Currently I'm sitting at home waiting for the WATER HEATER GUYS to show up. The should be here in about two hours ago. Yeah. About that.

Supposedly I will be starting my job next week. The paperwork is taking longer than they expected but I've already been invited to the company Christmas party (a little backwards?) so....whatever. I'm looking forward to attending just so I can say inappropriate things like "Hi, I'm Danielle. What do I do? Currently the only thing I'm doing for the company is drinking for free." I'm kidding, I'm kidding....sort of.

Rob is doing well. He's tired all the time and working super hard. We finally finished our first game of Battleship and he annihilated me. Yep. "Merry Christmas, Honey, I just sunk your battleship. Awwww..We're like a little Norman Rockwell painting.

Happy Birthday, Tiny!

Is there anything better than having your friends "kidnap" you in your pajamas at 6:45am on your birthday for breakfast at Friendly's?

Yeah, I don't think so either.

#301

Okay. I don't have much today. But I'd like to point out that apparently this is our 301st entry on the blog over the past 2 years. Not bad huh? Who'd have known I would come up with that much to talk about! (shut it).
So, um, Tada!

P.S. Battleship Update:
This morning I found one of Rob's ships. The tides they are a-changing!

Sometimes I wonder if other married couples read our blog and think "why don't we do fun stuff like that" or shake their head and roll their eyes at each other.

Then I just decide you're all jealous. :-)

Family Update

Thanks for the prayers, guys! Laura and I drove back to Maryland last night. We're planning to be back in Delaware on Saturday to check in on Deda again. In the mean time he has more than twice the allowed amount of visitors at any given time, so I'm sure the nurses were relieved to see some of the Kukich clan leaving for a few days. Deda is recovering amazingly well so far. We've all been encouraged by his repeated attempts to trick us into letting him just walk out of the hospital. Deda is actually a celebrated spy from WWII (yep. you can Google him) We're guessing he still has some of that spy training in him. And side note:"Deda" is Serbian for "Grandpa". (Look at you, learning something new everyday!)

In other news, Remember that interview I had last week? Well, as of Monday evening, circa 7:30pm, I officially became a member of the WORKING CLASS! That's right, folks, my days as a trophy wife are over! I'm meeting with the HR representative today to get all the paperwork filled out, etc. and I will be on my way back to "Business Danielle" post haste.

In the mean time, Rob got my Christmas package in the mail today, complete with half of a travel-sized "battleship" game. He is currently sinking all of my ships via internet. You'd think as competitive as I am, I would have picked a game that he doesn't actually have TRAINING in. You know, like Chutes and Ladders, or Connect Four. I might as well have picked "Risk".
Stupid Battleship...

Family Stuff

Just found out that Deda (my grandfather) had a stroke this weekend and is in the hospital. Laura and I are driving up to Delaware tonight to see him and the rest of the family. Please keep him in your prayers.

E-A-G-L-E-S: EAGLES!

So, today I got an AWESOME surprise! My buddies Jenn and Rob (different Rob) had an extra ticket to the EAGLES vs. REDSKINS game at RFK stadium and they invited me along! (!!!!)
You guys should know by now that ALL Kukichs are Eagles fans- but this was the first NFL game I've ever seen from a stadium... and the first pro-ANYTHING game I've ever seen FROM THE NINTH ROW.
THIS was our view!

Here's the crew: Chuck, Rob, Jenn, and Me

And the final score!! (Heck yeah, baby!)

Thanks for an AWESOME day, you guys!

The Office Christmas Party: Don't Leave Home Without It

Tonight must be the official "Office Christmas Party" night for the great state of Maryland. All of my nieghbors (re: extended family) are out hopefully not drinking too much in front of their respective bosses and waiting to see who will be the first coworker to decide that dancing on the tables is a great idea...
I've never been much for the Office Christmas Party. I'd rather spend a Saturday night with people that I'm not paid to sit near for 40 hours a week.
Then again, this year is a little different... I suppose that considering my current occupation is "trophy wife", you could consider tonight my own, personal "Office Christmas Party". I just had a nice, long conversation with my boss over in Iraq and my big plans for the rest of the evening consist of some comfy pants, a good DVD and the Captian. AND I don't have to worry about Janice-from-Marketing getting up on the table to sing her favorite rendition of "Grandma got runover by a reindeer".
Yeah, my office SO rocks.
P.S. Speaking of my boss (wink, nudge), I got another letter from Rob today and as promised, he included another one of their famous posters... thought I'd share

My guitar beat me up

Right now I hate the guitar.
The pads of my fingers are actually throbbing. (sounds like an exaggeration... it isn't). But the women's Christmas banquet last night went pretty well. There were about 150 women that showed. Rob had promised to call right after my interview and was determined to get ahold of me to find out how it went. It was 4:30am -his time- (middle of the guest speaker's message -my time) when his call finally got through. I swear anyone else I would have sent to voice mail, but you don't ignore calls from Iraq. Even when you're sitting at the front table in a banquet hall and everyone watches you get up and leave. Although later they found out that it was Rob calling from Iraq. I don't think it's possible to get a more sympathetic crowd than 150 Christian women. After dinner I was swarmed with invitations to Christmas dinners, weekend plans, etc. I thought that was really nice.

Okay, so the interview. I have no idea how it went on their end. My end is best described in three words: "Scary as Hell". They asked so many technical and intricate questions that I started to have flashbacks of my senior finals in college. I can't imagine that they left out anything that would necessitate a third interview...unless they plan to take blood. I got a look at one of the guys I'm up against and he was probably at least 15 years older than me (which is bad news because his resume probably has 15 more years of experience). But whatever. I know my stuff. My guess is that it's anybody's game.

K, saving the best for last; Rob sent me his first picture from Iraq today! Ladies and Gents, may I present my goof ball husband, who finds new ways to make me smile on a daily basis, and his goof ball buddy, Jay

Love it. :-) Merry Christmas, Boys!

I've Been Busy

I know you've all been on the edge of your seats wondering where I've been. So, in order to help everyone sleep at night, I figured I'd update... even though I really don't have much to report.

Rob's good..still working hard. Those of you who know him know that's about all he can tell me. So. Now we're all up to date on that (insert sarcasm)

I'm keeping busy. And those of you who know me, know I can tell you ALL ABOUT IT! (Lucky you).

I mailed all of the Christmas presents that need to be mailed on Monday. THAT was an adventure. I make it a point to only go to the Post Office once during the holidays (if I can help it). People be crazy, yo. I know I seem a little "Type A" what with mailing all gifts at the very beginning of December, but I have a theory (which has been echoed by my friend, Victoria). Gifts need "tree time". What fun is the Christmas tree if it's completley bare of gifts until the night before you open them? That's the whole reason we spend time putting ribbons and wrapping paper on them in the first place, right?

On Sunday I got a phone call from our church asking me to come sing carols for a women's Holiday dinner on Wednesday (as in tonight). I haven't picked up my guitar since I did this exact dinner LAST year. The past three days have been spent blistering my fingers back into shape practicing Christmas Carols. Yeah. Ouch.

Additionally, Andy (our realtor turned godfather) managed to land himself in the hospital over the weekend - scaring the life out of all of us! He's on the mend now (still not too late to say a prayer for him). And I'm planning to stop by again and whip him in a rousing game of Scrabble. *Andy - Don't expect me to go easy on you just cause you had major surgery... :-)

And (that's right, there's more) I have my "second interview" today at the company I REALLY want to work for. I'm hoping there aren't more than two interviews. The suspense is killing me and things are already S-L-O-W in the corporate world because of the Christmas season. Everyone is busy planning important things like the company Christmas party and that White Elephant gift swap thing. Yep. So fingers crossed and say a prayer at 3:30pm.

I think that about wraps up the last few days. I need to get back to practicing for tonight and reveiwing my interview questions so..."The End".

Moving Right Along

Well today someone else moved BESIDES THE TOWNLEYS! (A small party goes off in my head just thinking about us NOT moving)... Steve and Holly moved today and all of the "Young and Marrieds" showed up to help. This was by far the fastest move I have ever participated in (and that's saying something!) And there were lots of jokes about how Rob and I have provided only THE BEST training on "speed moving". This never gets old. Ha.....ha.
Before we knew it, we were playing board games (GO my favorite sports team, GO!) and consuming our respective body weights in hot drinks and marshmallow popcorn.
Anyway...congrats on your new digs, O'Neills! And thanks for the exercise :-)

The biggest downfall of our new Apple laptop is that I have to re-learn everything. (I know, I know. Cry me a river). I think my new "Beta Blogger" has switched some things around on me. No linking pictures, etc. So until I figure out how to make you work for it, here's a freebee picture of the happy, freshly relocated couple.

The New Paint Job.

Okay honey, here's the damage I did yesterday to our home. (wink, nudge). There aren't any pictures/curtains hung up because I think you have to give the paint a good 12 hours before hanging stuff. (So it looks like we just moved in...again...) That's my job for today...
K, BEFORE: (folks at home, do you see what I mean about the Christmas theme?)

Celebrating Christmas with Khaki

This morning I decided to take our living room back from Santa and his elves. All the red and green is enough to drive a girl nuts....plus I could swear I've seen a few kids hanging around the window looking for Jolly Old St. Nick. So after a consultation with our interior decorator, JPK (name withheld to protect the fabulous), I began the Townley's journey from the North Pole. (Sorry, it's late, I'm tired and the sarcasm is flowing).
I literally painted for 12 straight hours. Well, minus the hour I had to go back to Home Depot to get more paint. Go figure. And in living up to its reputation as the WORST home improvement center on the East Coast, their theft alarm was malfunctioning. (The one that goes off if you walk out of the store with something you haven't pai... you probably already know what a theft alarm is...) Anyway, every thirty seconds or so it sounded like the world was ending. I should mention it was also malfunctioning this morning when I was there (seven hours ago.) I asked the paint guy what was wrong with it and he said "Oh, it's broken." Behold, for I am in the presence of the Omniscient One. *Go ahead and look up the big word. I'll wait. *(No kidding it's broken.) Isn't this HOME DEPOT? You guys can build an entire home/office with the products that you sell, but you can't fix your own alarm? Just as I was considering bringing this to his attention, he handed me pink paint and handed the customer next to me my paint. It was one of those glorious moments where two strangers can look at each other and know they're both thinking the same thing.
Yeah. So back at the ranch, the paint es finito. I like it. I like it a lot. I'd post pictures but seriously, I'm smoked. Maybe tomorrow...

Hey by the way, Robin Hamilton, did you know our first month of this deployment is DOWN!?!
Oh heck yeah!

Happiness is Hug "B"

I got my very first letter from Iraq today! (!!!) Rob and I have a tradition of never writing our actual names in the return address. Over the past three years he's received a Lot of fan mail from "The hottest girl you've ever met" and occasionally the "Ruler of Fidget Land" or "General Townley" (We promote from within) will write to him. Yeah, so today I got one from "D. Hasselhoff". This will make no sense to you unless you read one of my entries from like, a week ago. That's right. Our blog requires dedication, people.
That David Hasselhoff, he's so hot right now.
Thanks for making me smile, Mr. H.
Anyway, in addition to that, the boys in Iraq are embracing the "irony of it all". They have found some old war posters that have been ...."improved" upon. These have circulated around the Ft. Meade area for some time, but in case you haven't seen them before.... here's one that Rob sent me. (Also note that I've figured out how to work the scanner on our new printer! Oh, I'm the woman.)

I love Jesus :-)

Peace on Earth... and in the mall.

Well, our tree is up, and our Christmas shopping is officially finished; let the Holidays begin! Yesterday Jessi and I spent four hours in Annapolis completing our gift lists for friends/family. The Christmas rush has already begun, but it's not too bad...yet. People are still smiling at each other while humming along to the carols played over the intercom and kids are lining up to have their pictures taken with Santa.
I can't stand going out anytime after December 15th. By then, most of the good deals are gone and desperation is setting in. (Think Christmas of '03 with the "Tickle Me Elmo" madness). By the 15th, the Christmas music playing in the background only sets you farther into "panic mode". They might as well be playing "The Final Countdown". All anyone can think of is how irritating it is to walk around the "Pictures with Santa" booth that inevitably is placed in the center of the mall each year, and how is it possible that every store has at least one screaming child?
Yep. Not the Townleys. We're done. (sigh...smile).

Tree-mendous! (oh, I'm good).

I've changed over to the Beta version of Blogger... mainly because the blog site won't leave me alone until I do. But it states that there's "no going back" so if it sucks...then I guess "oops".
Yesterday I went to hang out with the In-laws in northern Maryland. I took my camera with the intent of taking lots of pictures, but as usual, I forgot. I did get a few, though. We went to The Festival of Trees at the Maryland State Fair grounds. I have never heard of this before but it was insane! Basically different groups in the community decorate trees with themes and then auction them off at the Festival. All the proceeds go to the Kennedy Krieger Institute (I think... don't quote me on exactly where). Each tree has a title- and those were cracking me up. We saw the "Mys-tree" which had a bunch of clues on it and police tape, The "Statue of Liber-Tree" (self explanatory...I hope) and my favorite: "It takes Tree to Tango" which was actually two trees entwined (below)

and reminded me a lot of two other trees trying to tango...
Anyway, here's my crew... (half of which are looking at something more interesting than the girl counting to three)

Today a bunch of us are going out to play Ultimate Frisbee and shed some of those holiday pounds before they start. If you're in the area and you want to join us, just give me a buzz before 2pm.

A lesson from Polonius

"We are oft to blame in this, 'tis too much proved that with devotion's visage and pious
action we do sugar o'er the devil himself."
-Polonius, while talking to Hamlet.

"Does the ore admire the flames that transform it? Forced good or forced evil, for whatever
purpose, will cause a people to cry out in pain"
-Feisal Hussein bin Ali (King of Iraq, 1919 - 1933)

So another Thanksgiving finds the Townleys with an ocean betwixt us. And for what? Life hasn't been as rough out here as the last time around, yet this time it would seem much more about the nature of this confict of ours has been made obvious to me since I arrived. In short, there is nothing here worth another American life. The Iraqi social heirarchy has re-established itself to the point where economic interests (read: which family in Iraq can control the most oil?) once again drive on the violent, historic land disputes that made this cradle of civilization such a desolate bassinet thousands of years before America was even a country. Wether with intent or not, our hubris in presuming that a prolonged occupation of this place could control the Djinn's we have invoked in militant Islam has only gift wrapped an excuse for our leaders to keep us scared and obedient to "the greater national security." Make no mistake, we are no safer now than we were when Danielle and I
were children. Freedom is not on the march. Freedom is sitting in a corner office, to
cowardly to take decisive, uncompromising action to rectify the self-imposed state of
paranoia in which we find ourselves. There is nothing in this country worth another American life, save perhaps correcting the disregard for human dignity rampant in this part of the world which we have, in effect, fostered. There is no war here between demarcated sides. There are only personal, emotional vendettas between humans, melded into the guise of a larger conflict by men (on both sides) who shrug the responsibility of the lives their self serving decisions have cost. Ahmed the bomb maker (forgive the racially charged sobriquet) doesn't have grand intentions of toppling Western civilization. He's angry that foreign troops control his back yard, and that their presence here has drawn from all corners of the world violent zealots who have nothing to do with his former profession as a cabbage farmer.
Hence, he takes what action he can to kick the foreigners out. Think what would happen if a foreign army occupied say, Alabama? Good ol' boys from every volunteer fire department and Rotary Club would be lining up to take a shot at the invaders. On the other hand, Johhny GI over here only knows that there are a lot of Arabs with names that all sound alike trying to kill him and his buddies from home, and he has to do whatever he can to bring himself and his friends home safely.

Ideologically, the west will never understand the culture we so avidly seek to subjugate here in the desert. The Brits tried it and failed not 90 years ago. The Russians tried and failed in both Africa and Afghanistan, and managed to leave behind naught but rusted oil
derricks, horrible architectural taste, and a ubiquitous supply of weaponry. We cannot lay down borders and impose rules on a civilization that, out of necessity to survive, built it's stability around family ties, regardless of economic status. These people don't care about our borders or our curfews. Their families and tribes have been torn asunder repeatedly by western governments for the last 150 years; it's no wonder they have an innate, often violent distrust of Americans and our kind. We do not belong here, and we never did, save to buy some good coffee and hummus and go home. What need has there ever been to conquer a culture in order to reap the advantages its civilization (or lack thereof) can teach us? There are enough conflicts simmering here without our intervention, and they
will sort themselves out for good or ill without our prejudicial say-so. It's time for us all to come home, ladies and gentlemen. We aren't even fighting a battle anymore, we are only creating more work for ourselves at the cost of our own lives. And all for want of what? The statesmen who built the freedoms we so flippantly impose on others would be embarrassed to see what our leaders have become: graceless.

And now that I've become your ray of sunshine for the day...a happier note: My best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you all...may your bellies be filled with turkey and stuffing and your day's countenance be of good cheer and fellowship. No doubt I'll find some turkey of sorts over here...however your cheer and fellowship will be sorely missed.
-Rob

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We hope you all have a great time celebrating with your friends and family. Laura and I are driving up to Delaware to spend time with our cousins and grandparents... I also should be seeing Rob's mom this weekend somewhere north of Baltimore. (might behoove me to find out exactly where... i'll work on that.) So it looks like we'll be spending a few hours in the car. I've thought and thought, and I just can't remember the last time I drove anywhere that took hours and hours and hours....

(haha, oh the irony).
(P.S. There is no sound with this video so don't drive yourself crazy trying to turn up your speakers... also, I am famous in my family for being the worst videographer ever, so if you watch our 15 second clip and feel queasy, it's probably not the ham sandwich you had for lunch)
Anyway, We'll be on the road in the morning (like every other sucker on the east coast that thinks they'll beat the traffic on Thanksgiving Day). I think I'll burn some new driving cds...
Please say a prayer for Rob and all the others who are serving our Country overseas during the holidays.
Love you, honey!

Up and at'em!

There's reason to believe I MAY be starting work soon. (Applause...). Not that I haven't enjoyed having the past three months off, but I'd be going nuts if there hadn't been all this work to do around here. (i.e. packing up and moving over and over and ov...you get it). As of yesterday I have all but finished the unpacking, clothes washing, picture hanging, etc. And I still have to paint our living room... Remember that beautiful green color we painted it? Yeah, well once we moved out, we bought RED furniture for our apartment. (I've always wanted a big, red couch). And now that we're back...well, our living room practically sings "Jingle Bells" when you walk in. I may leave it for the Christmas season though... so festive!
Right, anyway, one of my new goals is to start getting up early again. My fear is that when I start work, I'll be so used to sleeping in that I'll be yawning all through orientation - which rarely impresses. So yeah. This morning I forced myself out of bed at 7:30am. Three months ago I couldn't have slept past 7:30am on a weekend. In fact, on a weekday by 7:30 I would have already put in a half hour at work! Now it's sheer torture. But today, victory is mine! In fact it's not even 8am and here I am, coherent and everything... in fuzzy slippers and a bathrobe (shut up).
Corporate America, look out, Danielle is on the rebound.

P.S. Kudos to that guy who told me to take my time and find a job I'll enjoy. Who was that guy?

The longest Blog since the beginning of... blogging.

Ah, Saturday. Actually every day is Saturday for me. But today was Saturday for everyone, so it's much more interesting. (Yes, I'm aware I just said "Saturday" way too many times.)
Laura and I started the day off with some Christmas shopping. (groan). When we had taken all the cold weather we could bear, we came back to my house for a very healthy meal of gingerbread tea, pizza, peanuts, and apple slices. (Random much?) And a movie from redbox. That Jennifer Anniston has burned me one too many times with her DEPRESSING movies. I was a big fan of hers during the "Friends" era, but as far as her cinematic career...not so much. Today was the last straw; "Friends with Money" was so bad we actually turned it off. I think I would actually rather watch "Stick it" than five more minutes of this one.
It's now 6:47pm (although it feels like 10pm because it gets dark directly after lunch these days) and the rest of this evening will probably take place in my pajamas on my big, red couch. I'm thinking something along the lines of "Family Guy; Season Two"... anyone?

Okay so it's like three hours later and I've found this ridiculous site called www.myheritage.com (or something like that). Anyway, you upload a picture of yourself and it tells you which celeb you most resemble. (Told you I was bored). So, THIS would be the picture I loaded of us:

and THIS is who we came up with

Personally I'm getting a kick out of the David Hasselhoff likeness....and Fabio. Then again, I have both of the main characters of "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" on my list.

...I need to find something else to do...

To the Commissary...and Beyond!

I've been a military wife for over a year now, and yet this morning was the first time I've been to the commissary since I was a dependant of my Dad's. I have our *new* neighbors ('new' because even though they've been here for a year now, we all only just met them), Josh and Heather (also military), to thank for this one. Tonight is our Thanksgiving meal with the Church group. We're all bringing something. I have been trying for days to come up with a dish that doesn't require cooking. (i.e. drinks...maybe the veggie tray?). No dice. So this morning, me and my two favorite neighborhood housewives, Adam and Josh, went to the commissary to get food.
I forgot how much cheaper the commissary is! I never go because it's a lot more convenient to shop across the street, and I still have nightmares about being 5 years old and dragged from aisle to crowded aisle for what seemed like years in the commissary. In my younger years I was sure I would be old enough to drive the car home by the time we finally emerged.
Anyway, the experience was a good one. (Cheers for sarcastic people to shop with!) We're planning to make this a regular outing in order to keep all of our kitchens stocked.

I'm sure somewhere in Iraq Rob is reading this in disbelief. He knows I've never been a fan of grocery shopping (i.e. I'd rather make a meal out of the leftover orange juice in the fridge and the brownie mix in the cupboard than go shopping).
Look at me, honey! All grown up! (26 years old and FINALLY goes willingly to the grocery store). I'm such a role model.

Yep. I Updated!

Well, it's been a few BUSY days... here's what I've been up to...

1.) Still only "mostly" moved in. The interesting thing about storing your stuff at people's houses is remembering who has what.
2.) Finally got the washer and dryer hooked up. (I have clean clothes!!!) We only flooded the basement twice and lost three screws from the dryer (all found)
3.) Fixed the hot water heater today. Okay well I didn't fix it, but the water heater guy did. And yes, it still counts.
4.) We got hit by some monsoon (slight exaggeration...but only SLIGHT) that the weather man called a "tornado watch". (A tornado watch? Seriously?)

The downpour started around 2pm and it was the kind of rain you swear couldn't last longer than 15 minutes because it's coming down so hard and in such big drops. Yeah. 2 hours later, still going strong.
Speaking of time, Rob should be calling soon! (This is literally my favorite time of day). The most entertaining thing that's happened to him in Iraq so far is that they are trying to talk him into re-enlisting. We both had a nice long laugh over that... and then we shared some angry thoughts that aren't printable here. Yes folks, this may shock you but we plan to be free of the USMC as soon as humanly possible...and maybe even a little sooner.

Home again, Home again, Jiggity Jig.

Yep, that's a nursery school rhyme. But it's all good because WE HAVE A HOME AGAIN! I'm a few days late on THAT news, but there's five million things going on around here. So whatever.
On Saturday I had about ten people show up to help move "us" (Rob and me... minus Rob) into our house. Now, I don't mean to brag, but if moving were an olympic team sport, I'm relatively confident that when all was said and done we would be on the winner's blocks singing along to the Star-Spangled Banner. These people know how to move a house! (They say practice makes perfect....and we have provided a LOT of opportunities to practice.)
Jessi - ever the photographer - took a bunch of pictures, a few of which I'll post here once I steal them from her. If you see them, that means I posted them. If you don't, it means I don't have them yet. Patience, grasshopper.

I realize this isn't the Grammy's or anything, but there are some people to thank: A HUGE thank you to our Bible Study for moving us...again, Thanks to THE GODFATHER, Andy (that's our latest and greatest name for you) for the pizza, and to my favorite sister, Laura, for providing beverages (and CEREAL). You guys are the greatest.

Honey, I'm Home!

I am so Smart. S-M-R-T

I'm anxious to get back into the "old routine" around here! I start the moving in process tomorrow. (In case it wasn't obvious, I CAN'T WAIT for that to be done!) The job search is coming along, and in the mean time I'm getting back into our old gym. It's been the healthiest way to release the stress caused by, well, everything. The class schedule has changed around though and I keep getting the old schedule mixed up with the new one. Yesterday it happened again- although I didn't realize until the class actually started that it wasn't what I was expecting. Instead of Power Yoga there was some other yoga class that concentrated on the mind or whatever. We did a lot of "let your face relax...allow your body to speak to you". I don't know about you, but I go to the gym to sweat, not sit for an HOUR AND A HALF and let my face relax. I think my body would have worked harder at digesting a cheeseburger. It finally dawned on me to pick up the new schedule - good thing too because I'd look pretty awkward showing up alone in the "Mommy and Me" exercise class tomorrow morning.

There is no Dana, only Zool

So hi everybody! It appears that yet again, I will be 'wintering' in the Middle East (like it's the Hamptons or something)...I arrived after a relatively smooth series of cargo and helicopter flights somewhere around 3 AM on Sunday morning. No sooner did I get on the airfield shuttlebus than I remembered one reason that I detest this place: Iraqis smell really, really bad. I mean, Danielle and I were in Africa last year, where they don't even know what deodorant is, let alone have the money to buy any, and the folks in Addis smelled somewhat civil. Not so over here. I think the whole country has a BO problem. Think of the worst BO you ever smelled, and then blow it at yourself with a hairdryer on high - there you have Iraq. Maybe add a little burning trash for flavor.

Anyhow, I'm living in what equates to 1/3 of a single-wide trailer in a crazy concrete bunker...and of all places, I seem to be among friends. For some reason, this iteration of the Iraq war has drawn to it all manner of old, bitter, burnt out vets with whom I am familiar, so we're all sort of conspiring to take over the place and bring everyone home. We'll see how it goes. Thus far, the idiots are winning the battle. The disturbing part is that the idiots are wearing the same uniform I am. Anything you guys hear from the news about things going well over here...don't believe it. It's just as much of a morass as last time I was here, and more complex politically. Like I said, there is no Dana, only Zool. (If you get that reference, you SO get points).

The food isn't bad, and I have a steady flow of bad coffee to keep me generally attentive and pessimistic, so I guess in that respect it's not too much different than any of my other trips. The hours aren't too nice (they created a job for me, so I have to work like 18-20 hour days to get myself up to speed...hope it slows down).

I miss home like crazy (and by home, I mean my wife...she's home to me); all of you are in my thoughts all the time. If you guys get the chance, stop and look at the trees change colors, and breathe in that crisp Maryland air for me. Thank you for your incessant prayers and kind words...your support means a great deal to us. I have decently regular access to email on yahoo, so hit me up if you get the chance! My response may be a little short, but I promise I'll make an effort.

More to follow! Love you guys!

-Rob

Because I'm Bored. That's why.

It's a slow day here in Townley-land. I totally stole this from someone's website (so feel free to steal it from mine). Unless Rob gets the chance to blog, this website won't be seeing any updates of interest until Sunday. Having imparted this knowledge to you, if my site meter shows a lull in traffic for the next few days, I won't be offended...or surprised.

I'M AMAZED…
At the efficiency super glue provides in adhering two things that I DON'T want stuck together (i.e. my fingers) and it's inefficiency in securing anything else.

I DOUBT…
The military is done screwing with us... call it a hunch

I CAN’T SEE…
Why people continue to buy Hummers. There are more fuel-efficient ways of bragging about how rich you are.

I WANT TO BEAT WITH A SOCK FULL OF QUARTERS…
People who regularly feed their kids This or This or This (To name a few) and then blame society because their children are overweight

I'M ADDICTED…
To iTunes. Rob got me hooked.

I FEEL BAD…
When I listen to KFed's "Po Po Zao". Admit it, so do you. Poor kid never had a chance.

I WATCH…
Grey's Anatomy. I've been pretty hooked on it, but I'm ready for Meredith and McDreamy to either figure things out or come up with a new plot line. "Seriously".

I LISTEN…
To National Public Radio. When you drive around as much as we do, you find out that a little variety goes a LONG way.

IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS…
I'd be spending a lot more time on this website.

I WANT...
To know who gave Tyra Banks her own show. (Add that person to my list of candidates for the "sock full of quarters" beating)

I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…
Cereal. And Sarcasm....maybe sarcasm should be listed first.

I THINK CHILDREN…
Are a gift...well, most children. There's a few in my neighborhood that I'd like to "re-gift" to someone else's neighborhood.

I CAN’T WAIT…
Till my man gets home!

I'M PROUD…
To say I can change a tire, tile a bathroom, and rewire light fixtures.

I HAVE A DREAM…
To write a book. One day you'll be paying to read my sarcastic antics...

I ALWAYS WEAR…
Flip-flops (yes, even in November), jeans, and a cell phone.

I FEAR…
Gas station rest rooms.

I WISH…
The dog next door would put a sock in it already.

I ONCE ACCIDENTALLY…
Oh no you don't. I'm not admitting that here!

I NEVER…
Take myself too seriously-- or anyone else for that matter.

I’D KILL TO…
Spend the holidays with Rob. Okay, I wouldn't actually KILL to do it...

I MISS…
Horseback riding. When I was a kid I was convinced I'd get a horse when I grew up...but I also wanted to live in a house made entirely of ginger bread. There's a chance I didn't think things through...

I'M LOATHE TO ADMIT…
I own the movie "Stick It". (Don't waste your money, I'll send you my copy for free).

I’LL NEVER FORGIVE…
Life is too short not to forgive. When I stop making mistakes, I'll stop forgiving others for theirs.

What's all the racket?!

Yesterday I had the "opportunity" to play raquetball with Micah. I have a few years under my belt thanks to my old Sentara buddy, Karen, so I figured what the heck?
Okay, somewhere between the ages of 23 and 26 I have gotten OLD! Today my back is sore, my legs are sore, and my feet feel like I must have played barefoot. It was great to play competitively though (I know, Me? Competitive? Never.) I've never been the girly girl who tried to sit out in gym class because she's afraid of the ball. Micah seemed to enjoy the game (I let him win...sort of..okay not really). So it looks like we're going to make this a weekly occurrence. In which case, I should probably start saving up for one of those electric wheelchairs....

5 more days until we move back in! I think the Guenther's cats are lighting candles and keeping vigil in anticipation for the moment when Scout no longer patrols their hallways looking for 'playmates'.

Frequently Asked Questions

K, I'm getting a lot of emails and phone calls from friends and family to find out where Rob is, what I'm up to, and how we're doing. So, here are some updates for you guys:

- Rob has landed in Iraq. He's "safe" (I don't think anywhere over there actually qualifies as safe, but whatever) and already hard at work. Some of his old pals from Maryland are there as well so at least there are some familiar faces. He has a mailing address so if anyone wants to send him letters/care packages, shoot me an email.
- More job interviews for me this week. Hooray. The recruiter I spoke with last week was REALLY excited. (Like "Too much coffee" excited). Should be an .... interesting interview.
- We are moving back in to our house on Sunday! I know this is not "new" news, but I'm happy to have something to be excited about. So yeah, it makes the list.
- We're doing "fine". I don't know really how else to say it. Obviously we're not like "THIS NEW TURN OF EVENTS IS AMAZING!!!!" We miss each other, and things are stressful, but we'll survive. All of the craziness that's occured in our first year of marraige has made us stronger. We're finding that these days, situations that would make other people tear their hair out in frustration just makes us throw our heads back and laugh. Life is life. It isn't always fair, but it consistently beats the alternative.

The hottest man alive mentioned he was going to try and update on here soon... I don't know when, but stay tuned!

And another politician bites the dust

By now everyone has heard about John Kerry committing carreer suicide with a realllly tasteless joke on Monday. But in case you missed it, this is what happened:

Monday, at a stop on the democratic campaign tour for Phil Angelides, John Kerry said this to a group of California Students, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

There isn't really much I can say that won't make me sound like a pissed off Marine wife. Lucky for me, the Marines have a much better response...

Going, Going, Gone.

Yep. So Rob left this morning...and it sucked. It wasn't a huge surprise - this is the third time we've been through this and it doesn't get easier, but you do get somewhat used to it. So, instead of talking about how sad I am and depressing all of us, I figured we'd go for something happier. Keep reading - I swear it gets happier...

We actually got to spend Halloween together this year. Not a big deal to most people, but this is the farthest into fall he's stayed since we've known eachother, so yeah, we were pretty stoked. We found a Haunted Hay Ride in the country and dragged Laura with us. It was hysterical, complete with the fake chain saw guy and headless horseman.

Anyway, thanks again for all the supportive calls and emails. We truly appreciate you guys! We had a great last few days together. Rob should be landing in Germany sometime in the next five hours and I'll do my best to keep you guys updated.
